Has anyone had experience with a smaller indoor pond using a rubbermaid roughneck container? I am aiming to create one in my college dorm room. Due to space restrictions, I was going to go with a 50 gallon container filled about 3/4 the way. Would anyone have recommendations for filtering and heating the thing or any other advice?

I think the easiest thing to do would be to just hook up a canister filter. There are plenty out there to chose from. That would also take up less space than having a sump. For heating, since there wouldn't be a sump, I would just get a submersible heater and throw it in the pond. Check out user rottbo's gallery. He has a similar set-up. It is bigger and probably a little more elaborate than you would want to go though.

Even a hang on filter will work. You might want to lay in 1" of sand or gravel to keep the heater out of direct contact with the tub.

thanks for showing my stuff off i like it

I'm a huge fan of that setup :naughty: . After seeing yours I'm thinking about trying to set one up like that too. I got an extra 40gal that had a cracked center brace that would make a good sump. It's a perfect system for growing out baby aro's. Like you, I'm hoping to raise a group and hopefully get a couple to pair off and have a hand at breeding them.

Thanks for the input guys. I really like your setup rottbo. I imagined mine to look something very similar to yours. What size is that stock tank and its rough dimensions? Where did you buy it? (lowes, home depot?)

Also, is that garbage can on top of your 55 gallon a DIY wet/dry? I did something similar to my tank where the output of a canister filter was guided to a garbage can full of bio balls.

Thanks for the help guys.

if you do we should share fish and get the gene pool a little bigger
and that grabage can on top of my 110 is just ther cuz the cat likes to take the top off of the filter but i am making one out of a rubbermaid wrapping paper storage bin perfect for this tall and skinny

i bought the rubbermaid at a farm supply store it was like $115 or something cheap it is 150 gallons rough dimensions are 59"x40"x25" (lxwxh)

No I didn't mean the arowanas, I meant my setup will look like your rubbermaid setup. As for the filter, I am either going to use a fluval 4 plus or my eheim 2128. The fluval is small but the eheim is too big. What do you think is the best solution for about 30-40 gallons of water and just one cichlid, perhaps a convict.

Give it a shot just don't put it anywhere people are going to screw it up.

That's a good point. I know a lot of people I've known at school have often expressed interest in getting my fish drunk, peeing on them, sh1tting on them, etc... Never underestimate the immaturity of drunk college guys....
