just have a quick question.. so the dorsal fins on my bichir are really skinny like theres nothing there holding the find to his body except the bottom of coarse. but it doesnt have the thin piece of skin? scales? connecting to his body like in the pic below. is this normal? or does this not make sense cuz its hard to explane...Photo by Joe Gallo

Looks pretty normal to me.

that's because that's not her pic.

sometimes dorsal fins get damage for whatever reason and most of the time they don't grow back the way it was before. if the thin piece of flesh are missing on all of them it could just be a birth defect.

Ahh, was wondering about that. Feel like an idiot now.

if yours doesn't have the soft membrane, or part of the hard spine is missing, then no it's not normal. Normal would be whats in the pic you posted. However, it doesn't affect the fish. i agree with is300zx, sometimes it could be a birth defect if all the finlets are that way, or usually its just due to injury, and the soft membrane or hard spine don't grow back or don't grow back to the original shape.

is300zx what are ur favorite fish stores in the bay area to go to? my wife and i go to 6th avenue flowers and aquariums quite often but wanted to check out others as well (sorry i know off subject)

yeah its fine. theres really nothing you can do. it'll grow back if its gonna grow back. same thing with damaged finlet spines (i know yours don't have this problem, but just an fyi). i know i said it's not 'normal', because 'normally' the finlets would be intact. But i don't mean that theres something wrong with it that needs to be fixed/treated, so don't worry, the bichir's fine.
