Dorsal spot

Do female flowerhorns have the black dorsal spot from birth or does it develop over time as they mature? I have four fry I'm growing out. One is an obviously male the other three not so sure. I bought them hoping to get at least one female.

they develop as they mature. i have one female, i didnt know wht sex it is when i first bought her, there were no spots on the dorsal fins. but then, at about 4" the spots started to appear on her dorsals.
 
Thanks guys. I know it doesn't always mean it's a female but I'm under the impression that about 80% of the time it does though right? I would buy a fish with those chances based off that so I'm just hoping I don't end up with a bunch of males I can't do anything with. I already have an adult male Thai silk that I'm looking for a mate for so one female out of the lot is all I really need. If I end up w a second pair out of the ordeal that would just be icing on the cake.

yup, ive never seen a male with dorsal patterns btw.
and fyi, nver had male bfore, i always end up buying a female. lol recently bought some midas fries, hoping if there is a pair of them. soo, you're planning to buy a fh fry and hoping it would be a female?
 
8 out of 10 times if a fh has a spot on the dorsal fin its a female. Males also can have a black spot but to know for sure is to vent them.
