Hey any of you MFK'ers double majoring? I was just wondering.

I was thinking about it and might give it a go. Currently I am trying to get my BS degree in Fire Science. I am pursuing to become an arson investigator so I have to take fire science and criminal justice. Arson investigators are also peace officers. So instead of just taking fire science I might as well go for my BS in criminal justice.

As for firefighting, I am doing firefighting while I go to school before becoming an arson investigator. It teaches me how fire is suppose to burn and how its not suppose to burn. It gives me the skills on what I need to look for when I am in the field. Plus firefighting is awesome :)

What do you guys think?

If you have the money to do it, get it done. I am awaiting an apt. with my advisor to switch to a double major for biology and environmental science and policy -science based b.s. degrees. Take advantage of what you can its always good to have something to fall back on.

Yes! I wanted to double major because I have have something to back me up if anything doesn't go as plan. Good luck! :)

Shouldn't be too hard to add a criminal justice major. From what I've heard they usually have pretty light courseloads, and if you have a somewhat related major some of your classes should overlap. I say go for it. For me, I have a marine bio major I'm working towards, so a double major is a lot harder than some simply because of the amount of hours I have. If your major is lower in hours, then get that double and look twice as good on resumes!

Yes it will look really good on your resume.

Random: I also have to go to a police academy to be a peace officer. My god...so much school, but in the end it pays off :)

Do it.

Yes, do it.

I double majored at the Bachelor's degree level and do not regret it. I don't use my second degree often, but I do use it on occasion.

The sacrifices you have to compromise are that you might not be able to have any type of job while going to school as the quantity of homework is about to go WAY up. (At least if you still want to graduate on time.)

If you plan to get a Master's or PhD be sure your grades are top notch. Some how the fact that I have 2 Bachelor's degrees was irrelevant when applying to grad school. I graduated in 3.5 years with a double major. Personally I thought that was bragging rights and would make my very average looking GPA look a lot nicer. I had a 3.2. While a 3.2 is not bad, its also not "stellar" and "Stellar" is what is needed to get into grad school. The double degree and 1 semester less of education was irrelevant on my grad school application, only that 3.2 mattered.

If you plan to go to grad school, I would encourage you to take an extra semester rather than risk getting B's because you are stretched too thin to get A's.

Here's my take. Do it if it is what you want to do. Don't take extra classes just because. Align with your future goals and go for what is needed.
