I have access to double pane glass that has no thermal barrier.
The glass is 5'x5'x1".
There are three pieces.
I was wondering if i could use them to make the front of a 12'x4'x3' tank?
Or maybe a 12'x12x40".
It would be a wooden tank with the glass going across the 12'x3' wide front.

Simply put does double pane glass act like a single pane when it comes to strength?

Double paned glass is only as strong as a single pane of the same glass. Is the glass actually 1" thick (each pane) or is that the thickness of the sandwiched panes?

Each pane is 1/2" thick.
So you are saying that it will not act as a single 1" pane?

Are they laminated or is there an air-space between the panes?

2 pieces of any size does not equal one piece twice as thick

If they are free or close too it, you should jump on them. The sky is the limit with what you can do with them.

They won't act like a one inch pane because they can slide against each other as they flex. However the second will support the first as long as there is no gap between them. They will be a really close equivalent to a single pane.

Curriosity is getting the best of me; what were they used for?

I will probably go look at them tomorrow. Don't know what they were used for.

I intend to use them for a 12'x4'x40" wood tank in basement. Maybe 15' wide now :).
