I went down to check on my new male WC Marble and what do I find? Him attempting to de-face a Dorado. Literally. I poked him with the siphon and he let the pinned Dorado up.

Some of you have doubted rays being predatory despite my Armatus being killed..... Well Deja Vu..... Another freshly imported male W.C. Marble. Another damaged prized Characin. 5 inch Dorado. 7 inch Marble.

I do not understand why you keep putting these fish with the rays after you found out first hand what they are capable of? From what I remember it seems lke rays have killed most of your prized characin stock.

Ouch!!!!

Sad but its still MONSTER!!!

When did the ray have a chance to pin down the constantly moving Dorado?

Yep rays can be very predatory. Never would have guessed with a dorado though.

Its good that you were able to save the dorado and I wonder if it will recover and heal up.

Yeah..... Ain't that the truth!!! Who would have thought a skinny freshly imported ray would be capable of this? I sure didn't or I would have put the ray in the pond. I put him in with the Dorado cause he is almost the same size across as the length of the larger of the 2 Dorado, He's a little small for my pond. So I hucked him in the 40 breeder that's tied into the pond. WAS planning on keeping him there for a week or so till he was off the crawlers and on to the same food as the rays in the pond eat.

And as far as my rays killing off most my prized Characin stock...... The rays killed of my Armatus...... My Rhaph is fine with rays that are probobly 18 inches across, it's ALWAYS been kept with rays. As well as my shoal of 4 Odoes also kept with my large rays. I believe it has to do with where they spend most of thier time in the water colomn...... Upper/mid = No problem. Bottom = Pounced on.

Who would have thought with a 7 inch ray that this could happen to a 5 inch Dorado? IF you can honestly say you would NOT have made this mistake then you are a better fishkeeper than I am.

Well, at least we can ALL learn from this.

Perhaps he is just experimenting and attempting various fish combos?

You will never know what combos might work until you try!
