OK I am still fairly new when it comes to Dovii's I never really knew to much about them. I am planning on getting one or the other.

What length do the two of them max out at?? male???

How fast do they grow???

are they in your face or are they a hiding fish???

I am planning on buying about 4 2" of one or the other. Once they are about 4" pick the one I like and only keep that one. I can easily keep him in a 75 until he is about 12" then a upgrade will be required which is not a probem. How long do you think from 2" to 12"???

I am no expert either, but I know that both dovii and umbee are a little shy at first, but then they come out of their shell and are really in your face.
They should grow fast and will probably be 12" in a year.

so should I not keep either of them in a 75 gallon for the firs tyear??

little blurb from a thread i did on parachromis, i have a whole lot more specific info i'm my brain so ask away

Parachromis dovii-

Captive requirements-

Fish size- males can get to 28 in the wild, though captive specimens rarely get larger than 20”. Females get to around 16”-18”

Tank size- because of the large size of these cichlids, and because they are very active cichlids, large tank sizes area a must, minimum for females is 125 gallons, males on the other hand need 180+ gallons, pairs may work in 180’s, though to be on the safe side, 240 gallons would be much better, because the footprint of 8’x2’, give much more space than 6’x2’.

Filtration- the fish are large so good filtration is a must, for a tank like a 180, I would recommend a wet/dry filter.

Décor- because these fish are known to be very active, I would recommend keeping the tanks for them, as bare as possible, have gravel, and maybe a piece of driftwood, but they are fast moving and could hurt themselves, on any sharp corners, of slate or such. There is almost no chance of keeping any live plants with them.

Tank mates- these fish are known for being very aggressive so, tank mates, is pretty much a big no, though you may be able to have a pair together.

Feeding- feed these how you would any other larger cichlid, large pellets, food sticks, etc are all good things to feed dovii

they grow at around 1" a month until 8-10"ish and slow down gradually, but it depends on the fish aswell as how good your captive husbandry of the fish is.

I have owned many Dovii.
They are somewhat timid until they reach 6" or so.
Then they come un-glued. Ramming the tank. bitting at anything that moves etc. I would suggest getting a few of each and letting them determine who stays in the tank.

I'd personally avoid both unless you have a large pond. Both are open water predators. There are several other, smaller Parachromis and Caquetaia species that do better in home aquarium.

I'm probably going to chatch a lot of flack for that statement, but a dovii shouldn't be housed in less that 250 gallons or so and an umbie even more. There are a lot of poorly cared for dovii and umbies out there.
