Hi all,

I got my first dovii a couple of months ago and it's been doing very well. I THINK it's a male, although I went against my usual rule about picking the largest of a brood.

*side note* - There was one in the tank defending a spot under a log, chasing everything away and the biggest fish in the tank at about 3". Surely a male, but on the other end of the tank was a slightly smaller fish hovering over top a large rock and NONE of the other fish would even try to take its spot. This fish, although a little smaller than the log guarder, also had the most blue of any fish in the tank, so I took the risk and got that one. It's reached a little over four inches and has added some blue to its fins, but not enough to be sure of sex. Anyway... *end side note*

It gets a diet of Cichlid Gold plus live Red worms, live Glass Shrimp and freeze dried krill. I noticed recently after giving it a couple of days of live foods that it began to display really shy behavior; showing nothing more than it's head from a hole in a piece of driftwood. Even when I'd feed it would stay there unless the food drifted close or I left the immediate area.

Normally it isn't the boldest of fish (it's kept alone with the hope of being a show male someday), but it does confidently eat, retreating to swallow, then coming back for more. After noting its suddenly increased shyness, and when I ran out of live food, after about a day and a half its behavior returned to normal; holding out in the open, hiding only to chew and swallow, then coming back for more.

I've read plenty about them being shy until reaching about 6", but is it normal for them to become so reclusive when given mostly live food?

Mines at about 9" now, and yea it's still shy. I work a lot though. It greets me in the morning ( unless I'm working out of town) but yea still shy, I've had him for about 2 months now.

Could be that while eating live food it gets into ambush mode and is hiding as a tactic for catching prey. Just a thought

that's cichlid smart thinking.

becaue besides that behavior he is fine and normal right? Just like a dog wen you give them good food.. They find a safe spot all alone to enjoy.

some fish do chase other fish away from food so they can hog it all up, so why can't one get food and run off to hide and enjoy?

My dovii was shy when he was 2-3" not very out going. but around 5-6" in community. he was like a dog. begged for food everything, wasnt very mean to the existing fish that he grew up with. but any new tankmates he destroy them :(. My guy has never been fed feeders(goldfish that is).he only got tilapia(live) but he was 15". Now good solid 18" boss. I dont really like feeders. I fed mostly pellets and frozens from the market etc

Haha! Sometimes I enjoy this tactic myself. Good food is often enjoyed most while all alone with your senses

All my parachromis have been like this so I wouldn't worry. My old dovii was still doing it at 14" and my current jag does it at 12".
