Hi all.

Anyone here got experience of breeding these beasts?
More to the point when do you introduce & separate the parents if at all?

I have bred these fish succesfully in the past and had 2 big spawnings with my old pair, unfortunataley after their 2nd spawning the female attacked & killed the male overnight with very little warning :(
I still have the female.

My other pair which consists of a large male around 10" mark & female around 7" have also previoulsy spawned but that was several months ago.
The male has now started to attack the female so i have partioned them.

Would love to attempt breeding them again but wanted some info on how best to reintroduce them to each other without fatality's!:irked:

I would use a divider......cut holes so only she can get to the other side if she needs to get away. I am trying to pair my 2 now. It's has been a good month and she still needs to get away sometimes.

ya my female is more aggressive then my male. she only wants him around to fertilize the eggs. i think im going to get one more spawn from them. this time im going to leave the babies with the parents and see if she will tolerate him more. if not then im going to remvoe the female

My 1st pair bred twice sucessfully and raised two lots of fry.
They then laid a 3rd time but before the eggs could hatch one or both parents ate all the eggs and then the female turned on the male & killed him overnight.

Would like to try & bred my 2nd pair again

Wow how big was ur female to kill ur male? My male is twice the size of his female and she is 8in so imagine the male. I never separate my pair. Just have a lot of hiding spots for the female in case the male acts up. She tries to mess with him sometimes but he doesnt play. Puts her in her place quick. Once the fry are free swimming, I take them out and put them in a grow out tank. I have left fry in with the parents and they seem to grow a lot quicker with them around.
