When I got my dovii about 4 months ago he was already over a year old but was only about 5" long. He was a little beaten up from the bigger fish that he was kept with. Since then he's put on about 1 - 1.5". Under the right conditions, do you think he still has the potential to reach 18"+ or would he probably be stunted and max out in the 12-16" range?

Thanks,
Chris

I rescued an Oscar a few years back he was 1 year old and had only been fed on flake and was about 2.5” long. He ended up being very healthy fish just small than all his mates or others I had grown up in the past. But its like the old fable the fish only grows to the size of the tank we know this to be utter. But the nutrition part off it is what does the damage. He looks fine to me.

Nice photo. Regardless of what you read, the majority of Dovii don't hit that 18+ range. IN answer to your question, the Dovii will continue to grow, but ultimately will get larger if it is in a bigger tank. A full grown Dovii (adult) really needs a 250-300 gallon tank to be in its prime.

The other thing you have to factor is the stock that it came from. The large Dovii you see often in photos are wild. A lot of the Dovii sold in the trade today are far away from their wild origins. Not to say it wouldn't be heatlhy and grow large. It's just one more thing you have to consider.

Food is important, but nothing grows fish faster than large water changes on a big tank.

Thanks for the replies. I'm keeping his tank super clean and I think he's growing steadily now. It wouldn't bother me if he didn't end up really big as long as he's healthy and happy. I'll be satisfied with a 12-14" fish but if he get's bigger it's a bonus. I'm not sure what kind of stock he was from but they are quite rare in my area.

I would have to say that ur dovii..should be able to reach its maximum lenght in ur tank..I don't know how big the tank..was but if it is ample in size..then you should be good..just keep him on a strict diet of meaty foods..and vegetable like emerald entrees..I know a carnivoure eating veggies.but it helps them out...and frequent water changes and hell be great...but on the other hand ur fish is awesome and I can't wait to get myne this week..

Thanks for the inputs and comments. My dovii is currently in a 75g and he'll probably stay there or my 100g till he's about 12-14" then I'll decide whether or not to get a bigger tank if he still seems to be growing steadily.
