I was going around Mt. Healthy (in Ohio) and I stopped by this fish shop to take a look. Well there he was... a 10inch Dovii perfect coloration just chillin in a small @$$ tank. I felt bad for the fish. Anyway thats off topic... I was wondering if he is worth 80 bones and I wanna keep dats but dunno if he is too much of a bully. Was also thinking houseing him with Jags. Just dont know much about the fish except that they are gorgeous and the king of chiclids.

Ty,
Chris

They grow well beyond 18" if given the chance. They are real glass bangers in smnall tanks. They have great colouration. They need huge tanks. They breed quite easily. They grow umm, slow-mildish. Just your typical cichlid but aggressiveness is a lot!

All true.

OT: hey... LOL

As long as you have adequate tank space for him he is totally worth it. You most likely wont be able to house anything else with him. Dovii are super aggro so watchout.

If you have a 180 gallon or larger, go for it. He most likely won't allow any tankmates though (besides a female dovii and maybe pleco/catfish).

If proper care is given your Dovii will easily exceed 18". Tankmates are possible but in most cases you need to have a 400+gallon tank for that to work out. $80 isnt to bad of a price for a nice 10" male.

Yeah, I'd say it's a good deal. My dovii are THE MOST AGGRESSIVE fish I have ever seen! I definatly wouldn't try to keep a dovii with dats, and keep a divider in handy with jags. I have always heard that dats aren't very aggressive, and the dovii will eventually get way bigger than the jags. I know jags are supposed to get 18"+ but Rally's jag was 8 years old and only 15" long, so...

Some folks with REALLY big tanks manage to keep doviis with tankmates, but that's the exception plan on keeping him alone unless you have a 500+ gal tank.

Eighty bucks doesn't sound bad but I've actually never seen a large male for sale around here, matter of fact you barely ever see juvies. AZ is very dovii deprived :(

They have a 20G tank at my favourite LFS with 5 or 6 dovii ranging from 3.5-6"ish. They havent got any of the mature colouration, and they just sit in thier tank very calm.

Other than that, they're the only Dovii I ever see.

i've got a 7" in with a 12" jag and approc 11" devil and its a pretty good balance for now but at 10" it might be hard to get him used to any tankmates but if you like him its worth a try
the price doesn't seem too bad either
