but he wont eat if anyone is watching him because when go away and come back the food is gone is that normal for a dovii to be that shy?

ehh certain fish are different are there any fast paced things goin bye

how long you had him, how big is he, wat size tank, etc...... need a lil more info on his situation

BUT YES YOUNG DOVII'S ARE VERY SHY IN THE BEGINING

IME they actually do better as far as breaking them from they shyness if you put them in a cichlid community when they are young NOT BY THEMSELVES

and I actually raised one from about 3.5in. up to about 14in. in with blood parrots, assorted predatory cats, and other SA/CA cichlids

he did fine but once he hit the 10-12in. mark he still did FINE with the fish in the tank he was raised with he just WOULD NOT ALLOW NEW COMERS INTO THE TANK

Hes in a 75g. he is about 3-4in. and Ive had him for about 5 days do you think i should put like a jack dempsy in there so maybe then he wouldnt hide all the time

Get expendable silver dollars or something. But all in all even without anything he'll come out in no time. Just needs time to adjust.

yea silverdollars and small cichlids would be fine jacks yea they would be fine JUST DON'T GET CONVICTS they are a natural prey item for dovii and every dovii I've ever had at any size small or big tend to go after convicts bad

and convicts usually don't back down so if they are equal size are bigger than the dovii they just FIGHT until one is dead I have experienced this several times with several different doviis and convicts

when I had my first dovii he was about 3.5-4in. long he fought with a convict at least twice his size for 2 weeks str8 until the dovii took the convicts eyes and then I seperated them but the convict lived on fine

O BTW I'M SPEAKING ABOUT BANDED CONVICTS I DON'T NO HOW DOVII'S REACT TO THE PINKS

how bout african cichlids

I wouldn't mix africans and CA. Especially not for something you want as a dither fish. You want something that swims regularly, fast/agile and non harmful.

will he eat the african cichlid do you think he is about 1-2in.

Doubt it unless you're feeding him live food usually. But that african pending on what it is could harm your dovii.
