Over the weekend got 5 small dovii cichlids, I put them in a 120gal tank with lots of hiding spots (too many maybe) now I ain't seen a fish in 2 days, not sure if they all died or if they just next level shy, death i doupt fish looked healthy and tank has been running for 2 years.
recon I need move decor around and find them, lol was not expecting the king of Central American cichlids to shy, rate I will leave the light off once I have established if they alive
guess I need shy fish advise please

My best bet is all the 5 are there. Since they are small , they are skittish and scared.
If you have any lights, switch them off.....add couple of guppies....they are the best to bring the lil monsters out. Even if this does not work out then you need to get ur hands wet and move the decor....which I bet would stress them even more.

Think about the environment they live in in the wild...20+" monster Dovii swimming around. Of course they're hiding when they're 2".

Dovii are pretty skittish until they're 7+ inches typically. You just have to wait it out.

I agree. Once they realize it's safe they'll come out & they grow quickly. In no time you will have carnage from the dominant ones killing the others don't worry.

thanks for the replies guys, will add some guppies this week
never realized how shy these guys would be
here is tank set up

Mine are about 7 inches and 2 five inchers and just hide most of the time. I hope they start to do something soon also. the only time they move is when they have eggs.

I feel ya. For being assassins at a large size I can't take how shy they are between 1-6". Pansies. I bet they're all fine just hiding. Get them some schooling fish to bring them out of their shell.

The group of young festae I got a few years back were the same, incredibly shy and reclusive when small. I think you've done the right thing by setting up the tank with plenty of caves and hiding spots, and a school of dithers (eventually feeders!!) to help encourage them out would be good too.
