Hello all, some of you may already know nive been planning one last change to my 300g stock, I'm sick of having a community due to the fact I keep adding fish and having to remove fish and swapping out fish.

Anyway I decided a few months back that I want to do one big 16+ inch pair, either dovii, chancho, umbee, festae ect ect. To cut a long story short ive decided I'm keeping my 6 inch dovii and I'm now beginning to find my current stock good homes, while I have time before the dovii goes nuts and I have to make rash decisions.

My dilemma is I would like a pair but I don't want the headache of dealing with all the fry, I already have a female umbee that's about 4 inch and my plan is to hopefully get them to pair up and live fairly happily, possibly spawning without success now and again but not kill each other. I would keep my divider ready of course...

Just wondering if anyone else has done or considered this? (not necessarily with an umbee)
Most agree that dovii and umbee cant cross breed but ive read about people trying so these fish must have been together for some length of time, female umbee is the only other cichlid I think gets big enough to tolerate a male dovii. Not doing it for as an attempt to cross breed them although if they did I would grow some out!-)

Any opinions?

I've seen Umbee cross with a central. It was a parachromis too. So it's possible.
But I think it's not likely. I think eventually the dovii would kill the Umbee.

Maybe. Is it any more likely than him killing a female Dovii tho? Maybe the frustration...
I saw the supposedly loisielle x umbee on YouTube but there were other centrals in that tank, was it ever validated?
He culled them all after saying he would grow some out...

I think he is more likely to kill the Umbee. They might be fish but they're not dumb, ya know. He will know that the Umbee is not a dovii and might only see her as taking up space.

Could be interesting to try a smaller type if fish, thats small enough to hide from him easily but big enough not to just get swallowed. you coukd maybe get fish that are small but really aggresive glass-bangers, which would be interesting pets.

Ive heard of Cons, but a big male Dovii would eat them. Maybe a big female Cyano Texas, or some of the Veija?

Idk, that just seems kinda interesting to me.

Also, ive seen that in a mostly bare tabk the parents eat all the fru from the previous batch, because if they didnt the bigger babies would eat the newborns. So that solves most of the issue, right?

I think its more a matter of keeping a female of any specues alive.

yeah, I think a pipe that only the female can get into is the way to go... either way I'm doing dovii umbee so we will see, I have two umbee hopefully one is female! don't hear that often haha.

Im interested in seeing how this works out. I have a zonatus in with my dovi and they seem to do great so far.

Female zonatus? That would be an interesting fish. Any other tank mates? What size are they and what tank?
Obviously people have bred Dovii with other species but I imagine mostly using female Dovii??
