Hey folks. How soon can dovii pair off? I️ had four and in two days there were two left. 2.5 in male and female
Thanks a lot this helpsWithout a male she of course will not successfully spawn.
The best way to get cichlids to pair up, is to get as many juvies of a speies, as you can and let them choose their out partner.
Getting only two, you have a fifty fifty chance one will die.
The odds get better the more you get.
Whenever I wanted to get a bonded pair, I'd buy 8-10 juvies and let the grow up together, and if I ended up with most dead except the pair, I considered that success. Sometimes even with 8-10 I needed more that one shot.
To get my breeding pair of haitiensus, I went thru 18 deaths before I got a bonded pair.
Asduanes pointed out getting a pair is not as simple as just putting a male and female in a tank. If you are getting fish from a lfs and there are several in a tank, often you can watch their interactions with one another and pick a likely pair. Some sellers may offer paired fish for sale, or a decent size group will often yield one or more pairs. For the 5" fish it would be trial and error and you may end up getting a male that kills her either before or after spawning. More often than not central american cichlid pairs end in the death of the female at some point. Once you get a pair, large water changes with water a few degrees cooler than the tank temperature can stimulate spawning by mimicking the end of the dry season, but honestly once you get a breeding pair how to get them to stop may be the harder question to answer. Post some pics of the smaller pair if you can, and also the larger fish. Sexing them at small sizes can be tricky sometimes males don't show their pattern until they are a little larger.

Hi, i'm only been in the fish hobby less than 4 yrs and probably about 2 1/2 years now raising large cichlids such as umbee, dovii. buttikoferi, red devil, midas, isletas and some gold barred midas. So i have multiple tanks. I'm not an expert on this but have successfully bred multiple pairs of umbees and doviis. I currently own 3 pairs of doviis with males around 13' - 17'. Two pairs are in the 20 gal long and the larger pair are in the 46 bow front tank. All three pairs are breeding non stop. Female likes to spawn in the terracota pot (2) that i picked up at Walmart and thriftstore. I've arrange some flat pieces of slate rocks on top of some thick ones for hiding spots for female as sometimes males get aggressive. Pick up the slate rocks at our local plant nursery for 10 cents/pound. Put a divider such as egg shell crate when starting for pairing. They will let you know when they are ready. My two pairs of umbees are in the 30 gal and 56 gal column. Males are around 11" and 18'. Those guys brred like rabbit as well. They spawn on top of some large pieces of flat slate rocks that i put on top of some thick pieces. I have two terracota pots on each end of the tanks where they put the frys when they hatch. I also have some large pieces of drift wood for the female to hide just in case. I hope that this helps and you're welcome to reach out to me for question. God Bless.
