i have had one dovii before but when i boght him he was already a foot long, mine is just over 3 inches long, he is still kinda shy, when do you think he will become more outgoing, he is in a 55 gallon(just while he's young) with my little JD, he is always wedging himself inbetween rocks and plants and hiding behind filter tubes, so far he is disapointing me. when will he become what his reputation has set the table for?
Thanks guys/gals

a couple more inches.

And slowing the dovii's growth.

yah, but how much could that really effect him, do you think it causes stress or something, with him always worrying about the JD?

doviis are normally shy on the juvi stage, but some are not. I have (2) 3" doviis and they are not shy at all.

be patient. At 3 inches he will be a little shy, give him a little more time. my 3 inch umbee is just coming around and starting to be more viewable. don,t lose faith, you will be proud soon!

When they are small they can really piss you off. They hide and are real skiddish.
At about 5" he will start to get an attitude. And he will also start to color up. Afrer
that, the larger they get the meaner. And eventually cause havic to all oround him.
Be patient and you will be happy.

patience.....the story of my life, thanks guys :headbang2

Hey Motag 7! I've had many Dovii's over the years and none of mine were ever skittish like some people say they are. It's all in training your Dovii right. All of mine were males and were kept in tanks by themselves eversince they were fry's. What I would do to make them come around is by making them get used to my presence by taking out everything in the aquarium and just leaving them one piece of rock that stands up so they have something to be territorial about. Next I would spend alot of time taunting my fish with my fingers by this I mean....slowly moving one of your fingers towards him and then slowly bringing it back farther. I do this every chance I get so that he begins to feel comfortable and eventually gets irritated by my fingers. This is when you can put anything in front of him and he will just sit there flaring off at you, also at this point he should not be dependant on his rock and will swim around alot showing you his confidence. All of the Dovii's I've kept I have tried this same technique and all were swimming in empty tanks with just gravel showing off and chasing anything that came close to them at just 3 inches. It takes alot of patience but if you want your Dovii to have an attitude early you should try it. It worked for me so hopefully it'll work for you too! Thanks!!!----Fred
