So I've had my male and female together for about a month now. My male is around 10" and my female is about 5". Both of them are very shy and will not leave cover until the lights are off. My female is a little more outgoing but my male is VERY skiddish. Anyways both tubes are dropped. I put a flat rock in the tank and covered it with their gravel, the next day it was completely cleared off. After I turn the lights out my female will start flaring at the male, biting and chasing him until he comes out from under his driftwood towards the rock (No serious damage just nipped pectoral fins). When he is near the rock she is completely fine but if hes not she gets kinda nippy with him. Is this breeding behavior or is she just being mean? Id love for this pair to spawn. I did a water change yesterday and her tube dropped more. Is there a way I need to induce spawning like some fish or do they just do it when theyre ready? Sorry for all the questions, these are my first dovii. Currently theyre in a 75g with an ac110 filter and temp at 81*. I know a 75g is small but I still have 9 months on my rent lease and its the biggest tank I can really fit without tearing others down. I have access to my 150g which is currently empty and a 180 at my lfs I can purchase at any time. I just dont have the space atm. Thanks ahead of time!!

female wants to test the male and keep on task, she will chase him down to do so, she wants the male to own her. then she lay. this can get quite brutal. that being said unless you can get a 240 or better tank sell off the the dovii and look for a pair of Jags in a 180.

I can get them an appropriate size tank, its just that i cant for a couple more months. Trust me, If I could I would now. I was just hoping a 75g could last a couple months.

well long as that male not get pissed and kill the female, they not very fast growers but have a divider handy. I would discourage spawning in a tank that size.

males get fired up they kill anything in the tank, including the female.

I have a divider under the tank ready at all times. He is literally the biggest baby ive ever seen. I have african cichlids more mean than him. But i know his inner dovii could come out at any time and thats why i have not moved the divider. I know spawning dovii is risky in this size tank but i might as well try it out i guess. If things go south I have a beautiful male red devil I could find a female for and give them the tank and move the dovii on to someone else.

we are talking fish here Miksha :)

All fish are different, especially intelligent cichlids. My pair are acting the same way-they are currently in a 135 until I move in 45 days. Then, hopefully they will have a 300 g.
They will spawn when they want to and separating them may break the bond they have, resulting in no fry and one dovii left. My red riger motaguense pair had to be separated because the female had a bad infection and it did break the bond.
Keep your wolves together and just keep a close eye on their behavior.
