On Juvi males do the spots tend to start at the front of the body and slowly work their way back over a period of several months? It seems to be the case with this one. At 2.5" - 3" it started getting one or two spots and over a period of about a month or so it seems they keep multiplying. Oh yea.. sometimes they look black sometimes they look brownish.. is that normal?

Thanks for the comments.. so the spots generally start off at the front and slowly work their way back as opposed to just showing up over the entire body?

i think so, never owning before but i guess thats rite.

My largest dovii looked like yours when it was younger. It had all the spots yours has, much better coloring on the fins and face, and even what looked like a nuchal hump. I was stoked. Then it hit 6" and laid eggs....

I wouldn't do a victory dance just yet. How big is that fish?

It's about 4.5". I agree with you my 6" female had the spots as well when it was 2.5" but by the time it hit 3.5" they had all dissapeared. Although she did not have as many spots as this one and they didn't increase in number with each month that passed, instead they vanished.

Having raised that female from 1.5" to 6"+ and receiving this one at 1.5" as well I've been able to tell some differences that leads me to think it's male. I know it's not set in stone but I'm a good 98% sure it will be male.
