Picked up a young dovii around 6cm about 4 weeks ago. Its growing rapidly and is pushing around 9cm atm. But during the 4 weeks I've had it, it's appearance with colour and patterns have changed a lot. Just wanting to know what peoples opinions are of the sex, and what to expect as it keeps growing bigger?

Any tips and suggestions on how to get the best colours showing would be appreciated.

First two pics when it was around 6cm.
Last two pics what it looks like now.

I have tiled the bottom of the aquarium and changed the lighting since i took the first couple of pics fyi.

Tank mates: 3 mono pbass and 1 polleni. The dovii is the tank boss, even though the pbass are about an inch+ bigger.

If i had to guess, your bass and polleni will be sized up and killed eventually once the dovii grows tired of them being in his space
Yeah I've always expected one day the dovii will turn and I'll have to keep it on it's own, but so far its working out really well.

It doesn’t take long, my friend has a 6” dovii and he is the most vicious fish I have ever seen. He can’t even put his hands in the aquarium without it striking his hands lol. Good luck chief. With a dovii there might not be any warning signs. They’ll just flip out and you’ll come home to dear fish

As I said on the other thread it's a male pal.
Run a blue light along side a white light and put the as close to the front pain of glass as possible to keep the light bouncing of the visible side of the fish.
Use dark background and substrate and feed high quality foods with a good variety.
Joey at the king of DIY has even suggested tanning lights for cichlids to improve colour but I'm not so sure, in the wild they received a percentage of UV spectrum light I guess.
He looks awesome already dude, regret selling my boy a year or so ago, at 12" I decided to sell even tho he was still behaving in my 300g community tank.... Maybe mine was the exception but my 12" Jag is meaner and stockier than he ever was.

What up Justarn? Haha yeah i already posted this thread before i started chatten with you about my dovii in the other thread. Thanks for your tips mate really appreciate it. Im currently designing my own LED lighting atm and will take your suggestions on board.

I had a big 12" male jag just over a year ago now and regret selling it. Very cool fish, but im really loving this dovii atm and stoked it's a male. He is growing really fast and starting to show a lot of blue and green in the face and fins, but im stressing that he isn't showing to many spots atm and really eager to see them come out.
Did you grow your dovii out from young, and at what size did it start showing it's spots?
