do you guys find the dovii cichlid fun? does it interact with you? will it welcome you when your approaching the tank or will it just hide? can i house a pair in a 180G tank?does the midas have a better personality than it?

thnx

The Dovii is the most entertaining fish I have kept. It is tough to raise them from fry as I have experienced they are very shy until the 6" mark or so. They start to come one round then and only get better. Mine just try's to attack me all the time. Honestly it wouldn't bother me if he chilled out a little. He will flair, whip and chase you to which ever part of the room your in. A 180 is to small for life in my option although there is much debate on this site in the past about that. I hear nothing but good things about Midas and think that would be a better option for life especially if you want a breeding pair.

180 is too small IMO. they will definitely interact with owners. I feel like they have one of the best reputations as a wet pet. If you want other cichlids that are known to interact with their owners: Oscars are my favorites and have the best reputation. Midas and Red Devils would work in there too though. But if you like Parachromis dovii, then you might be interested in Parachromis managuense or the jaguar cichlid. I think they're better looking and will stay a little bit smaller. You could fit a pair in a 180 if you want.

i already have midas is my 150 aha, but i'll get the jag for my 180 ... should i add the female first? can i feed them cherry shrimps? also does the Jag know its owner? does it flare a lot?

1) i would say no to even a single dovii.

2) yes Jags will most definitely recognize their owners. they're really really smart, even for cichlids. they can recgonize people from around 7ft away. I've even heard stories on MFK about a jag that would go ballistic if somebody in "their room" was wearing a hat and would go crazy until they took it off. (so they definitely have individual personalities too)

3. If you wanna breed jags just a warning, they might claim the whole 180 as their territory. If i wanted a pair I'd go pick up 6 or more young ones and wait for a pair to form as they mature. (don't worry, young jags are usually really inexpensive, around $3) Then rehome the other jags once i haved picked my pair. If instead you'd prefer to not wait to grow them yourself it might be a little harder to get a pair, but is still definitely doable.

4) if you do decide to go with buying adults, and adding them to your already established cichlid territories, there are some things that you can do to help them from being picked on. First i would feed all of the potentially aggressive fish that already have established themselves in the tank. Second i would move the tank decor around so that their are no territories anymore. Yes i would definitely introduce the smaller jag (which will probably be the female, but get them as closely sized as possible). Let her get comfortable for a few weeks, and then do the same procedure when you introduce the male.

5) when breeding any parachromis, always have a divider ready just in case
