Its kinda hand in hand, as they get larger they get more mature...so its kinda both. I've never kept dovii, but i have kept jags. which are the same family, and they normally start to get there coloration more once they are about 8" or so, normally. Might be different with dovii. Try giving them some earthworms as well, another way to spice up the diet.

Yea it all depends on their water quality, food, tankmates, etc.... but 6 doviis wow i hope u have a HUGE HUGE tank for them cuz when they hit 6 inches there will be ripped fins missin scales etc...

yeah 6 dovii You may end up with only one unless you have about a 1000 gallon tank.
Are you trying to get a pair? IMO HBH super soft pellet food and NLS are the best color enhancers for fish food. That is pretty much all I feed My cichlids and other fish I give black worms and frozen about once a month. I live by HBH and NLS!!!!!!!!! Good water quality has a lot to do with growth and color as well as good filteration.

yes well it only means they might get their color eairly. I've seen alot on the web like at 1inch with the freckles on their face and nothing else even at 4inches.

Good sign.. But doesn't tell anything other than that they're dovii. Look for black spotting above the lateral line when they get a little bigger around 4-5 inches and more elongated ones, they should be your males..
