I'm going to be setting up a tank (maybe 20-29 gal) and I'm thinking about putting a canister filter instead of a power hob filter. I was just wondering what are some downsides on canister filters? Anything you guys think I should know about them before I get one? THANKS and HAPPY EASTER! :)

I would recommend, based on your tank size, an external hang on the back filter and a undergravel filter. Much easier to maintain than a cannister for such a small tank. The only downside is ease of maintenance. If you buy a cannister I highly recommend the Rena x series. I would put a xp2 on that tank. They are really really quiet and are pretty easy to change the filters and they prime real easy.
Good luck and Happy Easter to you.

The only downside I've ever heard of with a cannister filter is the (rare) time when it leaks and pumps a lot of water out of the tank onto your floor

hoses and intake and exhaust can be a bit of a pain on a smaller tank also the size of the stand is smaller so you lose most of your storage space i prefer a can over a hob but the choice is yours to make and happy easter to you as well.

Howdy,

No tank is too small for a canister! I have an Eheim 2211 on a 15 gal

The only "down-side" (if you want to call it that way) of canisters is that you need to pay attention when you set it up: All hoses should be secured with hose clamps, if the filter itself does not already offer screw-on holders. Also, when you clean the filter, you need to pay attention that the unit is properly assembled before you start it up again, so it doesn't leak due to a wrong-positioned O-ring.

Cleaning a canister takes longer to clean hang-on filters, but it hold much more media, which provides a better biofiltration and also longer cleaning-intervals. A properly dimensioned canister can go for months without maintenance.

All these "problems" mentioned above are tasks a 10-year old can master (speaking of my younger self) ;)

Have fun with your new set-up,
