Howdy,

At some point I will have to decide on the future of my pirayas. I have 6 in a 220 gal tank right now. Unexpectedly, they are all doing well and getting along (except he occasional obligatory fin bite) at their current 4''. I thought I'd lose some early on, but I didn't.

I know I won;t have to cross that bridge for a while, but I tend to plan ahead to best provide for my pets. As I see it, there are three options

  1. downsize shoal to around 2-4 animals
  2. upgrade tank (not sure if I can pull that off in my basement)
  3. let nature take it's course and see what happens (not sure if that's a great idea...)
I have read that any changes in a shoal of Ps can be fatal, even if it's downsizing. Has anyone ever had problems with that, or is it just a tale?

Thanks,
HarleyK

my friends dad had a tank with 8 piranhas in it and wanted to set up another one because he didnt want over crowding fighting that sort of stuff so he set up the other one took 4 out that closey swam with each other in their own tank and the other tank he rearanged the equipment plants and so on soit would seem like a new aquirum and put them in there now he has 4 in 100 gallon aquirums instead of 8 in a 125 and they are all still alive and in good shape

I haven't yet tried downsizing my shoal, but I haven't had any problems moving them from tank to tank. They have gone from a 55 to start to a 125, to a different 125, then back to another 125 after I got it the way I want it.

No doubt something is need with 6 pirayas in a 220. If you can upgrade that would be the best option imo, if not the best bet would be to downsize, rearrange / take them out, change things up and re introduce them like it is a new tank.

upgrade if you can that will be the best.
the only problem I can see with down sizing is that there will be more space to claim for each piraya and they may re-establish new pack order so maybe a little fighting going on there but shouldn't be too bad. but I've never owned any piraya before so have no idea how they behave.
if you want to keep prefect piraya then downside to a solo in that tank :)

well the hidden expense in downsizing a shoal is the legacy costs. Healthcare, pension, 401k. In this climate its nearly impossible for an enterprising pygo to distinguish themselves from the shoal. Not to mention make sure you're not liable for anything. Might want to consider an attorney. The only thing in the water badder than a piraya is a "shark"...

LOL, D.

Thanks, guys
