The one in your pic is a poly. This is what's normally sold as a dragonfish.

Well also here in our place, the chinese sellers refer to bichir as dragon fins/dragon fish,I dunno thier primary reason, maybe a marketing strategy because for them dragons are somewhat symbol of goodluck and prosperity, the one you've picked is indeed a polypterus.

Nice goby!! I haven't seen one in person,I've read its brackish? can it be in freshwater for life?thanx

I'm told they do much better in brackish but mine is in fw with high aquarium salt.

ok itv could be either or both are refered to as "dragon" in most of my local lfs but the first pic is whats commonly refered to as a "dinosaur bichir" dragonfishes is whats commonly refered to as a "dragon goby"
but derailing for a second you paid 25.00 thats over priced for both fish named above i can get both at my lfs for 7.00 each

That is deffinatly a Sengel Bichir and even if its not a Sengel which im 99% sure it is, you can tell its a Poly from the nostrals, the pointy little "tubes" coming of its face, also the bichir in the picture only has 1 set of fins near its face where as the goby has 2. So if your fish has 2 then i would think its the Goby if 1 then i would think Bichir.

it is a senegal and as for those gobies, they are brackish all the way, although many pets shops around here sell them without knowing this, including petsmart, and you can pretty much just see them dying in the store tanks

I had 2 dragon fish (dragon goby) u bought urs for $25? wow how big was it because if it was just tiny juvinille it was way over priced i bought mine for $4 a pop! anywhay they are intressting fish to have was urs like one on the link or like the pic dragonfish?

for the record Polypterus is refered in the Phils. as "DRAGON FIN", obiously because they're fins, especially the lower jaw species resemble that of the legendary chinese dragon. The fins run down the back of the bichir and along it's elongated body, much like a chinese dragon..just my 2 cents

but back to the topic the pic you posted cant be viewed anymore, but the pic dragonfish posted is a pic of a dragon or violet goby they can live in FW but do better in brakish conditions...
