I was wondering if anyone has one of these and if they like them. I thought they were pretty cool, in an ugly sort of way. Are they varaciouse live eaters?

i was thinking about getting one, but they are a fussy eating fish, and need really clean brackish water

I didn't know they were brackish fish. Do they live in fresh while young, and then move to brackish? By fussy eating fish, do you mean they will only take certain kinds of food? Or that they are hard to break into eating pellot type food.

they dont eat fish- you could keep them with neons if u wanted. You will have continuous problems unless you keep these guys in brackish water. Add two to three teaspoons of salt per gallon. If they start looking slimy, change half their water and double the salt in their water.

this them?

i have one of those its about 6 inches long and is in freshwater, with 3 neons 6 angels 1 discus 1 golden algae eater and 2 cory cats. it eats frozen brine shrimp and flakes. my lfs said that they can live in brackish or fresh but will do best in brackish. don't put them in with anything aggressive, (i used to have 2) they are really peacefull and hide alot. they are really fun, and really pretty, i hear they can get up to about 22 inches long!

also it will eat cyclop-eez, my mom bought it for one of my kids, i didnt even know what it was when it came home, at first i thought it was ugly but my daughter loved it so i had to figure out how to take care of it and it kinda grew on me. i would eventually like to put it in a brackish tank but don't have an extra tank for it, it haas been living in fresh for about 6 months now and it looks and acts healthy.

They are adaptalbe as far as the salinity goes but they do need some to stay healthy and grow as large as they can. Even a tablespoon per 5 gallons will help and that level is good for most fish and does't bother most common plants. They also are not competitive feeders and a small fish would just about have to swim into it's mouth to get eaten. they often take up mouth fuls of sand or fine gravel then spit it back out as they eat the detritus and bacteria on it. most slowly starve, they like tubifex worms, black worms, brine shrrimp, and filter sludge. I know it sounds wierd but they eat it.

Yes, they are found in the Gulf of Mexico down to 100 feet deep on silty bottoms. They still do best in brackish conditions but if you wish to convert one it can be done if you proceed slowly.
