Fish Freak, are you sure you don't have the small freshwater species Rhinogobius duospilus? It only grows 2 inches long. Males look very different from females during breeding.

Tom500, how long is "their whole lives"? Of course it's going to live its whole life in freshwater if freshwater is what kills it.

I knew someone who had one for about 6years i dont know how long they live tbh but i just assumed if shops were selling them saying fresh that this was a fw fish that tolorated salt. haha how wrong i was.

Yes very wrong. Never trust shops. Most either don't study their fish or lie about their requirements in order to sell. Money is what matters to them, not your fish.
Six years is not a full lifetime for a violet goby. 10+ years is more like it. Do you know what it died of?

Plus, a lot of shops rely on what their suppliers tell them about the fish they sell. if the supplier tells them its a fw fish, why should they question that? I would think most shops probably don't really research most fish they buy, they just trust the supplier is telling the truth. So not all the blame can be laid at the feet of the individual shops, although I wish more shops would do their own research before they bought fish.

Yeah they're not all to blame. It's still irresponsible though to sell something and not be able to tell buyers how to keep it.

I'd like to breed this fish, but nobody sells mature individuals. I've got a whole 210 gallon tank set up for them if I can find two or three more.
