hey, i got an issue, my drains are burping and gurgling really loud. Air seems to be rushing down the pipes with the water and splashing at the bottom in the sump as the rush of air makes large bubbles, or atleast thats what i think is happening. i have 2 drains and 2 return pumps. the distance between the the bottom of the sump and the top of the main tank is about 65 inches so the pumps are pushing roughly 700 gph. the diagram explains the rest of my setup. how should i stop the drains from burping?? also, what is the problem?

This is how I took care of the problem, notice the same setup as you. 2 Drains, using 1 1/2" PVC, the only thing that is required is a small hole a the top of the PVC on each drain. This does about the same thing as a Durso standpipe.

I would replace the 2nd elbow (the one on the outside of the tank) with a tee. Then run a short vent pipe up to above the water level of the tank. If your fittings are glued, it may be easier to put in the tee just below the outside elbow.

I will post a picture late of my setup, it might make it clearer.

A ball valve in the drain pipe could help to, close it part way to slow the flow, reducing the distance the water falls & eliminating air gurgle

Here's that photo.

Noisy plumbing can almost always be traced to improper venting. In this case I would say that a vent will definitely fix your problem.

k thanks guys, im going to try dan's idea. so i can put a tee right onto the bulkhead? because they way i have it right now, the outside elbow is threaded on one side and barbed on the other for the flex hosing. ill try to find a tee with 2 barbed ends and a treaded on the side. any other things i should know about before fixing the elbow

Just make sure you put a short piece of flex tube on the top of the tee to bring it an inch or two above the waterline. I put two elbows on top of the vent to minimize dust getting sucked in. You can also use a little filter floss to keep dust out, as long as it doesn't stop the airflow too much.

I hope it works to quiet things down! :)

hey, i made what you said and it didnt work. the noise is just as bad as before. im just wondering now if a 1 1/4" drain is enough to drain 720gph? you think so, i was told that a 1" drain would do that but i went wit 1 1/4" to be safe
