Tobad my side didnt have these back in WW2.
 
to be totally honest, it does seem like a bloated idea, but tahts how most military oreinted designs start up.. after all, look at the ABL (Airboirne Laser), a 13 ft diameter laser mounted in the body and nose of a full size Boeing 777... its an anti ballistic missle "weapon".. sounds a little bit extravagant, but it exists none the less, we're suposed to get a total of 36 in the inventory, although I'm sure the number have changed in the last few years.
 
This idea has been used for sci fi since the fifties, we are now reaching the stage where it might work. I can think of three problems. 1) barrel wear, motion+ mass = heat, 2) energy source, there aint no free lunch, motion equals ergs and thatbmeans a power souce, 3) cost effectiveness, a >50 M2 bullet costs about 40 cents to make, a tungsten golf ball that size has got to cost more than twice that. It is point three that prevents enen the cheaper version of uhv rounds from being used. Wait a few years.
