If bio-balls dry out for a short period of time does it kill all the beneficial bacteria on them??

most of it probably like 99%

Yeah, and it may even be toxic to put back in your tank (if I remember right?). Since the bb is already gone I'd rinse it off real well and start over.

they's dead

well then if you have a wet dry sump with overflows how do you do big water changes?? When I turn off my pump the water stops flowing over the bio-balls, and my tank is a 180 gallon....so big water changes take a long time.

the bioballs should be fine for a hour or so, hopefully the filter box will keep the humidity high around them, so there still moist. if it takes longer then a hour for your water changes i think your doing it wrong.

if at all possible i would leave filtration running during the change

I decided to rig up a canister filter to take water from the bottom of the sump and flow it back over the bio-balls even when the main pump is off. Not only does it solve my problem but the extra filtration couldn't hurt either.

Do you think this 180 gallon tank is over-filtrated??

Penguin Bio-Wheel 350 HOB
Dual Overflow with 40 gallon sump (all bio-balls) and Magdrive 18 pump
Cascade 1200 Canister Filter

I don't believe there is such a thing as over-filtrated bud.

Awesome filtration setup.:headbang2

i agree the only way your over filtering is if your sucking every thing out of the water like a RO or DI filter.
