I got some "Fluker's Culinary Coop Soldier Worms Premium Treats for Chickens" off amazon and crumble them over my tank with my fingers and the tetra go insane. My cichlid are semi interested but its like catnip for the tetra. Really fun to watch. Any downside to this? Seems like it should be fine they are just dried soldier fly larva like whats in bug bites, just less processed. you get a huge bag for like $7

Anybody else use these just want to make sure I am not missing anything that might hurt my fish.

THanks

Only downside maybe more oil slick on the water surface. You would be able to see it if when the filters are turned off or in the still water line area of the tank.

It won't hurt your fish.

Insectivore/carnivore species I have kept loved soldier fly larvae-based pellets. I'd say whole larvae are an excellent choice based on that.

I use Ken's Fish soldier fly larvae pellets (both as pellets as well as ground pellets), along with a number of other animal and plant pellets and flakes and other things. My fish love them. I have not used the actual dried soldier fly larvae, but I do use crushed mealworms (again, in rotation with many other foods). Both of those are like crack for my fish, even if they may not be of the highest nutritional value by themselves.
I strongly believe in as varied a diet as possible. Not only it is good for the fish, but also there is never an issue with the BS of 'fish just wanting to eat a certain kind of food'. I have not had issues with oil slicks, at least in the manner I feed.
