Hi, I have been cycling a large tank (750 gal) for 4 weeks now....
no fish yet.... the bogwood I have from Malaysia(which has been salt
treated all winter) has long stringy clear/whitish things growing out
of it.......kind of slimy looking and it sways back and forth with
the current.
Anyone know what this is? how do I get rid of ti?
Will it hurt fish if I add them now?
Any advise would be great thanks!!!!!
P.S.- when I set it up(4 weeks ago) I got some filter water
from a friend....it was really dirty but I'm talking 5 gallons.......
I threw it into my tank...........

take the wood out and clean all the slime mold off. soak it in really hot tap water. the filter water is only good when you add fish. you added benificial bacteria with the filter water but it needs fish waste to feed on. add more filter water right before you add fish. with that big of a tank you should be able to add a fish or two every week without a problem. just my 2 cents.

Can you post a pic? Yeah its pretty common for bogwood and driftwood to grow slimy mold. You just take the wood out and clean it off. I would just clean it off with really hot water and put it back. If you leave in the tank you can always just let the fish eat it. Some plecos will the mold on wood. I wouldn't be to concerned about. weather you leave it or remove it I don't think it will any harm.

yeah the fish will eat that and/or the algae that grows on it.
Also im pretty sure that there is little to none beneficial bacteria in the dirty water. just crap.
From what i understand you actually need some of the filter squeezed in or gravel or wood etc from another tank where the bacteria can attach inself

Every piece of driftwood I've ever put in any tank has had this. This "fungus" is from sap leeching out and feeding a form of algae. Boiling it does little. Wipe it off and it will just come back. Normally takes about 2 to 3 weeks for it to run it's course. Plecos, ottos, rainbow sharks and amano shrimp relish it.

I've kept several "wood eating" loricariids over the years so I have to out new wood in quite often, and they absolutely go nuts over it. My L204 typically rids a good sized piece of it in about a week. Unsightly, but relatively harmless

Thanks for all the replys.......Taking the wood out would not be easy...
very large heavy piece...I will get some rainbow sharks and loricarids
and see how that goes....thanks
