i Know this should be in the aquascaping forum but this is my home and i trust you guys so i will post it here.

i decided to redecorate my tank with real driftwood. i bought them with pieces of slate attached to the bottom of them but i want one piece to lay on its side and the attached slate is made for it to stand straight. i have tried to place rocks around it to hold it down but its been a failure. what other ways could i try to secure this thing down? is hot glue safe or any other type of sealant? i have a large piece of slate to anchor it but would rather it not be seen.

You could take it out and place it in a container with water and put a large stone on top of it until it sinks by itself, although this method may take a while. So i would suggest that you remove the piece of wood from the slate base. Dry off both items. Get some aquarium silicone/sealent and place the wood how you want it on the slate base and silicone it on to the slate. Allow it to cure for 48 hrs. before placing it into the tank. You can simply cover the slate base up with some gravel if you dont want it to be visible. Or rather than siliconing the wood to the base again, you could just use some decent sized rocks instead.

Certainly will. I use the stuff for everything i need to bond together in my aquariums. As long as the wood and stone is dry the silicone will bond. It will also help if you clean the surface of the stone by wiping it off with a moist rag then drying it.
