I just added a couple pieces of driftwood I found in a creek bed that looked like it had been there for a while. I checked it over good and worked the wood down to the solid core. I put the wood in the tank and weighted it down ( had no vessel large enough to soak the wood in) and now it is leaching some color into the tank.

About how long does it take the wood to become waterlogged?

Do you guys recommend additional water changes? How often and for how long?

Thanks in advance for the advice

It was best that you washed it thoroughly and scrubbed it good to remove and parasites laching onto it and to remove bacteria on it you should have washed it in HOT water better in boiling. You never know how long for a driftwood can be waterlogged usually a few days to a couple weeks...some people found their not waterlogged for a whole year and yet it has been waterlogged...some will...do you know what kind of wood is it? As for water changes you can to remove some of the tanning from the tank, but it can be left their as the carbon in your filter will somehow remove it sooner or later, when i have it i leave the tannings in it if i wanted to replicate the Black waters in South America/Amazon Biotope...;) it will lower your Ph though, but its nothing bad, i heard it somewhats puts them in the mood for some ya know what...:naughty: lol

Pretty sure its Red Cedar. I did scrub it with a wire brush/scouring pad and washed it in hot water bf..then power washed it for good measure. Hopefully that got all the little critters off of it. Makes the tank look nice, and the Angels and African Leaf Fish seam to like it pretty good.

well then if they like it then i think you should just leave the tanning in their...;) if a fish likes its surrounding your providing good health to your happy fish :D

Soak the driftwood for a few weeks in a 5% bleach solution or something like that.
