i got my water checked at a pet store and they told me the PH was a little high they remcmoned drift wood they said it lowers the PH a little bit.I just wanted to have a second oppin tell me what u think.

Howdy,

NoRtHbAyKeEpEr has a good point.

Anyhow, driftwood acts by the same mechanism as peak, however, not as efficiently. Furthermore, just like peat, it loses its capacity after a while. Peat is easy to replace and cheap, different story with driftwood.

What substrate and rocks do you have in your tank? And what pH value does your tap water have? Maybe there is an easy solution to your problem.

There are several ways to lower your pH, and drift wood is not the best ...

1) use pH-lowering water conditioners
2) peat. Depending on hardness, you may have to add some RO water to your tap water.

Good point on using peat. because if you happen to be using wood that has been submerged in water for a long time, it will take longer to lower PH than the newer wood. Therefore peat is more acurate and reliable.

I used to use peat and liked it. I would just fill a nylon stocking with it and put it in my filter. It works great and brings the PH down slow so your fish adapt. Just make sure you rinse.

chances are the pet store just wants to sell you some more stuff. depending on what fish you have, for the most part your ph will be fine. find out exactly what it is at, and tell us what fish you have too.

If you use peat your water could turn light yellow sometimes it makes the tank look great, but if you don't like the look use carbon and it will remove the color.
