does drift wood affect the water in pH or hardness. how do i stop it from affecting the water

Malaysian driftwood dropped my pH from 7.0 to 6.5 with a kH of 3

What type of fishing are you going to be stocking in your tank?

The PH is actully perfect for all of those fish as the water is naturally acidic in the amazon and yes it does lower the PH, if you wish to buffer pick up some crushed coral but it in a fliter bag and put it in your filter it should collect good bacteria and buffer your PH to 7- 7.5. Good luck with your tank

If you have a low kh (do you know your kh?) then it *can soften it. The kh of my water is 14 and there's no amount of driftwood in the world that's going to soften my water. The softer the water (the lower the kh) the less 'stable' your water is chemically as far as buffering capacity and it being able to resist pH crashes.

did you soak your driftwood jag?

I soaked it for about a hour and then put it in my tank. :D

I heard that it will release tannins and keep my pH for the life of the wood, so I wasn't going to boil it or soak it for week.
I bought it and wanted to add it to my tank when I got home.

With the wood my pH is about 6.5 I have a Fluval 1 plus as my filter and cut all but 2" of the sponge and filled the bottom half with small pieces of Tufa Rock and my pH is at 6.8 now.
