hey guys. my tank use to be really clear before i started to add in some drift wood, fishes are happy, a nice green color is appearing, is that normal and does that change the chemistry in my tank?? anything to be worried about???
Normally you will see a tea colored change in the water from driftwood leaching tannins into the water. Green color water is normally caused by algae, due to the tank being placed close to a window.
I guess it is possible the wood had some type of algae on it that caused your water to turn green but I have not heard that before. However I am far from an expert.
Sounds like algae to me as well... did you pre-soak and/or boil the driftwood before placing into the tank? I like tannin in my water but I still boil mine quickly just to kill any "unwanteds".
Yes thats normal with new driftwood. Its tannic acid & lowers pH very slightly. Nothing to worry about, but if you dont like it carbon will help remove the color. You may also see some white fuzzies start growing on the wood. This is a harmless fungus & will clear up in a few weeks. Also nothing to worry about, but you can boil the driftwood to kill it.
