drift wood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Craigslist, pet stores, the beach, fast flowing rivers. I sanitize the crap out of it no matter where I get it, so no problems yet after 1.5 yrs. Type in "bog wood" and "aquarium driftwood" into the CL search bar. If nothing comes up, just look up "aquarium," see if any of the tanks have bog/driftwood in them, then shoot an offer to the poster for the wood only.

What do you use to sanitize the drift wood. I've seen some at the pet store but it's small and high priced. The guy working there also told me it would give my water a reddish tint. Not sure I want that.

You can take the "reddish tint" out of the water by adding some additional carbon to your filters. I get mine from the beach or the river. Lots of good pieces washed up after the tsunami hit us over here on the west coast. You can sanitize it with salt and hot water. Some people say bleach and soak it for a while. Then soak it for a week a while later. The only problem with this is that I dont like to put wood that was soaked in bleach in my tank, but eh that is just me. Dont use softwoods (i.e. conifers) as they will forever leak sap that will be hazardous to your fish. Use hardwoods instead as they wont leak sap or other dangerous chemicals. Im going to set up a DIY driftwood thread at the end of the week so stay alert for that!

The only peice I have, I got from Manzman (forum vendor) I've had it in my tank for about two weeks and have yet not seen any tannins... Forgot to mention the wood is manzanita, here is a pic just in case your not sure what it is..

How long did yours take to water log?

First, sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread...

Still in the process (this is day 4). I'm not sure if they will ever get as heavy as I want them, so after about a week I'm going to attach them to black tiles to weigh them down and keep them level.
