i live in northern ct . there is a lot of woods around me also a lot of down trees from the hurricane that pasted thru last year . i was thinking about taking a few of these down branches and putting them in my tanks . i new you have to soak them for a while before you put them in the tank but can i jus strip off the bark from the down tree and place it in a bucket or large bin let it soak for a few days then place it in my tank with out hurting my fish

Depends on the species of tree, avoid softwoods and evergreens. As these will decompose and also release poisonous sap. It also depends on the size of the tank, for example: if there is any harmful chemicals on the wood, in a large tank this will be diluted and therefore not as harmful, whereas in a smaller tank it could be deadly.
Peeling the bark, pouring boiling water over it and soaking it in a large barrel (changing the water every 24 hours) for a week or so + is what i would do.
