Hello!
I`m setting up a new aquarium so I went yesterday to a vet shop. I found some nice driftwood pieces (don`t know if it is bogwood or driftwood, sorry for that) and the seller told me that the driftwood was imported from Africa and it is used for Amazon species because it lowers the PH level.
Is it true or false?
Thanks for your time!

soft bogwood will lower the ph slightly and add a tea stain effect to your tank this will give you a dark water tank (amazon) if thats what you want some woods will continue to break down while others lose the effect after several months maybe you can post a pic i'm familar with most wood on the market..

It will color your water like blackwater. Blackwater is good to many fish, but wich fish shall you keep?

Even hard woods like malaysian woods will lower your pH. If you want the water darker you can put untreated wood into the tank. However if you treat it, it won't leach out the tanins into your tank water. Search Wood treatment and you'll come up with some hits.

Thanks guys. I`ll search for some wood treatment because I don`t want to change the water`s color. You gave me some useful info. I`ll have an Amazon theme tank that holds only common fish:

-5 or 6 tetras
-pleco
-2 angelfish

The substance that discolors the water is called tannic acid, and true to it's name will lower pH. The more discolored your water gets, most likely your water will drop in pH.

do wild angelfish need the bogwood?
