I have been given several really cool large peices of driftwood mounted on slate and some coral. I would love to use them in one of my freshwater tanks, but, they were in a saltwater tank. Can I use them? How would I clean them? Would they be safe for my fish? Also my lfs guy told me that i can soak the peices of coral in a bleach solution for 24 hrs, then in clean water for 24 hrs, then rinse it off and it will then be safe for my freshwater tank. What do you guys think, would it be safe?

the wood soaked for a few days should be fine im not to sure on the coral

I would soak it for a few days in freshwater....it was in an aquarium before. If you like it use it. I get mine from lakes so something that was intended for a tank should be just fine.

You can also use hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach.

I would NOT use the CORAL in a fresh water tank. It will alter the PH of the tank.

If the coral is plastic it won't alter the pH at all. Even if it is real coral you could still use it if you want to keep Tanganyikans. It'll actually do a nice job of buffering the tank for you.

wash the driftwood and leave it in water for a day or two, then just drop it into your tank.
i wouldnt go with the coral.

If you're still unsure about what it will do to your tank you can test some of the water that you soaked it in to get an idea of what it'll do to your water.
