I was in Pier-1 today and they had one of the most beautiful pieces of driftwood I've ever found for 15 bucks. The problem is, it has some sort of coating on it. I think it was linseed oil.

Does anybody here know? Anybody ever come across wood at Pier-1?

And best question of all, can I extract the linseed oil from the wood and if not, is it toxic to fish? People do drink it after all...

here is a Link

and a pic...

Try boiling it first of all, I imagine that would atleast put a dent into removing the oil.

i would be iffy about that coating on the outside..I would mos def do everything to get it off and then repeat it again and again..

Sorry I dont know what Peir 1 is but I found this on the link you posted

Care & Use
Dried/Natural Florals. Keep indoors, out of damp and humid conditions, and away from heat and direct light. Do not get wet. Color may transfer onto adjacent surfaces if exposed to moisture.

Strange............ Im wondering if its really supposed to be used as an ornament and not suposed to be used in like a fish tank. If your hell bent on using it I would try to have it boiled, even then id be a bit sceptical to use it. TBh there are loads of LFS's out there with wood thats safe to use, check out ebay too.

Pier-1 is a furniture store. It's certainly not intended as aquarium decor. All their accessories are more along the lines of "looks good on a table"

It was the look, shape, and price of this particular piece that got me.

If you were to throw that in a river or lake, it would be driftwood instantly. In your tank, you have smaller conditions, so what I would do is fill something with water that will submerge that piece of wood, and then leave it for a few days, and then draining, and repeating for at least a week or two.
