While remembering what I learned about cell walls, I realized that they are selectivly permeable and do not let salt in. I have a piece of driftwood in a bucket for my brackish tank. The water it is soacking in is fresh water. When I put it the brackish tank, the driftwood will be hypotonic to its surroundings and the water will flow out of it. Is this something I should worry about?

It looks pretty awesome right now. I pulled out my extra bag of gravel and I am going to put that in since I do not have enough gravel to hold my plastic plants in place.

Sounds like a picture is in order.

As far as the driftwood, is your main consern floating or diluting your salt content? I think the dilution will be extremely minimal. The difference in density will be considerable in a piece of 'already wanting to float' wood.

My concern was that as soon as I put it into the tank, the fresh water that I soaked it in would leave the wood since the wood cells are selectively permeable and it would float again. Obviously this wasn't a problem. I looks really nice now, I would post a pic, but I am going to add some gravel to my tank now.

The gravel was added, all of the ornaments were removed and I will post pictures soon.

i would be worried about the drift wood coming apart my friend put drift wood in his salt water tank and it fell apart just detererated in the salt and killed all the fish as they ate the wood little bits flooting around the tank . just my 2 cents dont know for sure though not knowing much about brakish water

Thanks for your input, I will closely monitor the tank. If anything gets crazy, it is going!
