i would like to put a piece of drift wood in my 90 gal tank ... pieces from the pet store are soooo expensive for tiny pieces my question is if i find a piece of drift wood what do i need to do with it to make it ready to go in my tank ??

You can boil it or bake it in the oven.

i usualy boil mine for a while it helps get a lot of the tanin out

If the diftwood has been in water a lake river etc it might not have any tannins in it you can put it in a garbage pail and pour boiling water in let it soak till the water cools do this 2 0r 3 time to kill any bacteria on it. If its newer wood It will leak tannins however that wont hurt your fish . Dont forget to put something on top to weigh it down . Hope this helps Pat

awesome cuz i was afraid one time i got somerocks from the beachat plymouth mass and they were the greatest color of green and i thought i cleaned em well enough but my whole tank became infested with some wicked algae growth and my fish got sick it was terrible
