I have read that putting driftwood in your tank will lower the PH. If my PH is already at 6.0 - where I want it, is their a way I can put driftwood in my tank without it lowering it even more? I mean 6.0 is low, but it works for what I have.

all depends on the wood... if you really wanna know.. put some water in a bucket/cooler/whatever and throw the wood in for a week and see what the water does...

Thanks for the replies guys...

If it helps, it is driftwood from a tank of driftwood at Petco.

Is crushed coral in the filter actually a feasible solution, or does it just sound like it would work?

I've used coral to counteract the driftwood in a couple of tanks. Its worked quite well for me. Watch the parameters and add more or less as needed.

ive found that the biggest thing with PH is that it doesnt fluctuate often. Ive never changed the type of fish I think I coudl keep because of the ph of the cities water. As long as it is consistant then all is good IMO.

driftwood is good at lowering ph but it also depends on the type, size and how much of it you have. if you only have a 12" long piece in a 10ft tank then its not gonna do nothing to that volume of water. there are some woods that dont mess with your ph, such as mopani and red moor. some have said mopani does but ive got pre packaged stuff from hagen that says it does not affect water chemistry and it never added any visible tannins to a bucket of water over 3 days nor to my tank over months. the red moor definitely doesnt.
