I work in grading and come across plenty of saturated buried roots. Could these be used for driftwood after being cleaned? They look to have no bark on them and alot of them come out of areas already in the water, so I believe they'd sink after sterilization.

Should work great... Worked well for me. I pulled these pieces from the shore of a lake in Kansas during a low water period, the pieces were previously submerged but dry when I got them. They are the stump/root portion of smallish trees. I took a saw with me to the lake and cut these pieces off the trunk of the tree. No issues other than the normal tannins, had them in the tank for about 18 months now. I don't know how well they sank, since I siliconed them to the tank before filling it with water, but the pieces were pretty heavy and dense.
