So i live in seattle WA and I do NOT want to waste a ton of money on driftwood. So, i was wondering around the beaches here there is a lot of wood dried up sittin on the beach day after day. Before I actually put it in the tank I will get some pics up once i grab a few pieces to give u guys a hint what they look like. But does this sound like a bad idea in the first place? Does driftwood have to be from rivers/streams?

I am sure others will give better answes, but, if you have a salt tank, use wood from ocean, freshwater use wood found their. You will run the risk of getting unwanted critters in wood found at both locations. I would boil any pieces to kill off any problems first. Good luck. I hope this helps you.

Put the driftwood in a mild bleach solution. Let it sit for several days to kill anything inside it. Then soak it in regular water for about a week, changing the water out everyday. Finally, use atleast 3x-4x the usual amount of dechlorinator to remove any of the remaining chlorine. Or you could boil the driftwood. This gets the tanins out of the wood as well.
