I am walking my pitbull on our regular route....Everday I pass by fallen branches that can fill up a tank:drool:....There are pine cones seeding off these trees...I am guessing these are pine trees, right???So I pick a few branches and bring them home...I manage to "shave" off the outer, dry layer...All is left is smooth skin...I figure I will let them dry off for another week, before tossing some boiling water over them.....

I kind of have these same questions because "real" driftwood is sooo expensive ($70+ for some sticks? no thank you)

I know that the driftwood you get in the LFS is compressed for a long time, so I'm not sure how just plain branches would do in a tank. I heard driftwood from the beach is ok though? Just doesn't quite match the amazon theme I was trying to plan.

I too would like an answer about your question :)

I agree....The $70+ spent on XXL pieces is not my cup of tee...I have picked many pieces along my beach and used them witrhout any fatalities....I will dry these branches and place them in my Convict125 breeder setup....

i would assume that any type of wood emitting resin wouldnt be good for your fish

most people would say no but i would think as long as you dry it out properly it should be fine

Avoid softwoods any harder woods or cypress(doesnt rot in water) wood be better. Bog wood is if I recall correctly the hard parts of ancient trees from long long ago.

dude c'mon you probably spent twice as much on your filter that you will replace in 10 years. spend the $50 on a piece of wood that you will have for a life time.

I have some pine driftwood in one of my tanks. It hasnt hurt the fish any, but it isnt nearly as hard as my Malaysian driftwood and I am afraid it will rot away with time, but its no great loss.
