So I was going on a beach walk today when I stumbled across an amazing piece of driftwood. Its 4'7 across and has a diameter of about a foot. The kicker is that it's hollow! The problem is it's not hollow ENOUGH. It has a hollow diameter of about 3 or 4 inches in the middle but could potentially have about 10 and still be a really sturdy piece of wood. In the next couple of weeks I'm going to work on hollowing it some more. Then I would somehow boil it. After that when I get my large tank I'll hopefully sink it and put it in! What I was thinking could be really really cool is to grow some sort of moss on top or just some cool bright green plant that will cover it all. Anyways here are some pics and ideas are appreciated! Oh also I'm still in the process of figuring out how I'm going the hollow the sucker out. driftwood 2.jpg

Nice! You doing saltwater or fresh?? I'm interested in finding my own wood also, not just because of price but because it will be more rewarding! I wonder if you could just soak it in bleach overnight and then rinse it out real well and soak again in clean water??

If you do that u would probably kill ur fish. The wood will overnight soak up the bleach and once u have done that u cannot change it. Boil is best. Once bleached splashing and washing water isn't enough. Even if u soak it in water it will just be mixed. U will have to bleach then soak up water let it try then soak water and let it try and keep doing that depending on how well u soaked it in bleach. Very bad

Hey rawr u could just drill the damn thing. What i did was drilled big hole in the side but make it a little jagged to look natural so fish can swim through. And if u have a long and big enough drill bit ( i mean like LONG) you can just drill the sides, perfect circle, oval watever. Urs look mostly hollowed pretty well just deal with the closed circle on the side.

yeah i was thinking about that. And Martin I'm doing it fresh once i get the big enough tank haha. And I was wondering how much something like this would sell for (not that I want to sell it but just interested)

Most the wood sold around were I live is Malaysian Drift wood, its nice but the prices are crazy expensive! I just found a real good article on Manzanita Wood and it is all over the place up in the Sierra Nevada's. I'll be up there next month camping and collecting some nice pieces of wood!

Depending on how big you need the hole to be in your piece of wood, you can buy real long (3'-4') drill bits, I know electricians use them? :headbang2

I think I'll have to use the huge drill bits. and what kind of wood do you think mine is?

Have no idea what trees in your area and if you found it on the coast, well it could be from anywhere! If it is a hardwood I would give it a try. I would probably soak it in the tub for a day and see if it turns water a color before you do any work on it. If the water is clear I would try it but I really have no experience as well. I subscribed to your thread so keep us posted!!! :headbang2
