I just got a piece of driftwood for my tank. The owner of the fish store I got the piece from said it was tank-ready so just to be safe i washed it off for 45minutes... There is a faint smell of coconut tanning oil coming from the wood. I'm not sure exactly what kind of driftwood it is but I was wondering if any there are any types that smell like this naturally or if this is unnatural and if i should take it out of the tank.

unless it's from a coconut tree, i have no idea... never heard of this... try washing it again and use boiling water, if you didn't already.

It may fade it very slightly, but what is more important, the color or the safety of your fish? !!

O i almost forgot, It is attached to a base (I think its made of slate) with a screw it looks like, could this be bad if it rusts? I'm not sure if it is rustproof but im assuming since it was made for an aquarium it is o.O

You could always replace the screw with a stainless steel one from the hardware store if in doubt! If a magnet doesn't stick to the screw it is stainless, but if it is a cheap grade of stainless it will still rust slowly.
