I've recently picked up a larger piece of driftwood, and it is pretty heavy. I am wondering if it is safe to place it in the aquarium without anything below it to spread the weight evenly? The glass is 1/2" thick glass as well as being bare bottom.

I was planning on putting it above eggrate. Any other options or would it be safe just to place it in?

I don't see a problem with it. The water in the tank is going to weigh more than the driftwood.

the problem isnt with the full weight of the water compared to the full weight of the drift wood, its the fact that the weights is located in a small amount of space ie very dense. this means that if the amount of weight that is pushing down on a small location is large enough it could break the glass..need more information in order to be able to give a justifiable answer.

That's true, but that driftwood would have to be pretty darn heavy and only have 1 or 2 points touching the glass to break it.

Just remember, everything weighs less underwater. The driftwood will displace water so you can subtract the weight of the water displaced from the weight of the driftwood.

Can you take some small pieces of slate and silicone them to the parts of the driftwood that will rest on the bottom, that way the weight will be distributed over a larger area

slate, or other pieces of driftwood, even. even resting on top of gravel will spread it out.

Tank is bare bottom.

Thanks for all the advice. It completely went over my head in regards to weight in water. But just in case I think I will put something onto the parts of the driftwood that come in contact with the glass to spread out weight.
